NOT LONG TO WAIT FOR THE INEC 2018 AND iSCSS TECHNICAL PROGRAMMES

With just under six months to go before the 14th International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC 2018); which incorporates the long-established International Ship Control Systems Symposium (iSCSS 2018), opens in Glasgow (Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 October 2018), the component parts are all coming together.

• Major sponsors announced for duo of naval events in Glasgow
• 100+ technical presentations by authors from 19 countries

“Earlier this year we announced that L3 MAPPS is the Principal Sponsor of the three-day conference. Now we can add three key Major Sponsors to the roll call – Rolls-Royce; BMT, and Babcock International Group; we thank all four for their involvement,” says Conference Chairman Capt Matt Bolton RN, Ministry of Defence, UK. “The active participation of these organisations ensures we can deliver new and exciting aspects to both Learned Society events which are organised by FIGS Events on behalf of the IMarEST (Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology).”

“Babcock is pleased to continue our support to INEC as we recognise this unique event delivers new and innovative engineering ideas together with successful examples of practical support to naval vessels worldwide,” says Simon Knight, Naval Engineering Director, Babcock International Group.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our younger engineers, particularly during this Year of Engineering, to take the stage with their ideas and contribute to the future direction of maritime technology. I am looking forward to hearing the wide range of papers being proposed and having time to discuss these topics with fellow engineering professionals.”

Authors from 19 countries to deliver 100+ presentations
“As will become evident when the conference programmes are launched at the end of April, all the topics coming under the conference spotlight are highly relevant to the themes adopted for the duo of events - ‘Inspiring Naval Engineering’ for INEC, and ‘Revolutionary Technology Inspiring Ship Control’ for iSCSS,” says Capt Bolton.

“We are already able to announce some interesting statistics. Over a hundred technical papers will be presented by authors from 19 countries – Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, India, Italy, Kuwait, Nigeria, Norway, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK, United Arab Emirates, and USA.

“Their presentations will take place under nearly 30 headings including some innovative areas such as ‘Exploitation of Marine Robotic Systems’ and ‘Enhanced and Autonomous Navigation’ as well as sessions that have long formed the backbone of both INEC and iSCSS. Interactive sessions will be an exciting introduction in 2018, these aim to provide participants with increased interaction with the authors, and an opportunity to discuss in detail the innovation and concept behind their paper.”

Strong support
The strong sponsorship support from four organisations that play vital roles within the naval sector is backed by a list of highly pertinent supporting organisations: The Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI); UKNEST; US Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG); Society for Underwater Technology (SUT); Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE); and the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE). INEC/iSCSS 2018 is also supporting the Year of Engineering, so it is highly appropriate that once again, young authors have been encouraged to enter for the Sir Donald Gosling Award, open to authors of 35 or under.

Looking back

Over 300 delegates from across the globe attended the 13th International Naval Engineering Conference (INEC 2016) held in Bristol, UK in April 2016. With its highly topical theme ‘Engineering the Triple A Navy: Active, Adaptive, Affordable’ the biennial event hosted a visit by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, an Honorary Fellow of IMarEST.
